Fake vs. Real Christmas Trees? You Might Be Surprised at This Answer

LAS VEGAS – Many Nevadans will be making the big decision this weekend: whether to buy an artificial or real Christmas tree. It’s a choice with both environmental and economic impacts.

Jane Feldman, conservation chair for the Sierra Club Southern Nevada Group, says natural Christmas trees offer some major environmental advantages, including capturing global-warming pollution and preventing erosion. On the other hand, she says most ‘fake’ trees are manufactured abroad using polyvinyl chlorides (PVCs).

So, there’s a large transportation bill in fossil fuels to transport those trees from overseas here to Nevada; and of course, since they are made of petrochemicals, when they hit our landfills, they don’t biodegrade."

However, twice as many Americans still buy artificial trees. Feldman points out that making the switch to a real tree not only helps the environment, but the U.S. economy as well. Natural Christmas tree production is a $1 billion industry that provides 100,000 jobs nationwide.

Bill Ulfelder with The Nature Conservancy is also a fan of the environmental benefits of real trees.

"They capture climate-changing gases from the atmosphere, so they help abate climate change; they’re putting oxygen into the air for us to breathe. They’re good for wildlife – mammals, birds, insects."

And for Nevadans who really want to get back to nature, Feldman says you can also chop down your own tree – as long as you have the proper permit.

"Both the Bureau of Land Management and the Forest Service allow harvesting in some areas in Nevada on public lands."

REPORT OF A ARREST

City — officer reported that he observed a vehicle that had violated a traffic law. Officer stopped the vehicle and identified the operator as Tiana M. Wilson age 21 of Eureka, NV. During the officers investigation Wilson was arrested for failure to signal and D.U.I. # 1.

REPORT OF A POSSIBLE DRUNK DRIVER

Officer received a report of a individual who was driving while intoxicated. Officer located the vehicle and identified the operator as Patricia H. Colville age 43 Ely. During the officers investigation Colville was arrested for open container and D.U.I. # 1.

REPORT OF A FIGHT

City — the area was patrolled, but no fight was located.

REPORT OF A ACCIDENT

City — officer reported that a vehicle being operated by Martha Jones of Ely was traveling on a city roadway. The City of Ely was doing construction work on the roadway. The vehicle Jones was operating traveled over a ditch in the roadway and the front of her vehicle became stuck. A accident report was completed.

REPORT OF A BURGLARY

Reporting party stated that someone had entered into a building on his property and removed several saddles and power tools. Investigation continues.

REPORT OF A CITIZENS CONCERN

City — reporting party stated that she observed a pan of antifreeze on a city street. Officer attempted contact with the occupant of the residence, but no one was home. The antifreeze was placed back into the yard.

Officer observed the residence and documented its condition. Officer will contact the owner of the residence and advise him of the complaint.

City — reporting party stated that someone had stolen her mediation from her purse. A report was completed.

REPORT OF A LOST HUNTER

The individual was located and returned to camp.

REPORT OF A DOG PROBLEM

Officer located the dog at large and identified the owner as Gregory Hibbs of McGill. He was issued a citation for dog at large.

REPORT OF A WELFARE CHECK

City — officer contacted the family and reported that they were fine.

City — officer reported that there was indication that abuse had been taking place. D.C.F.S. was notified and the investigation continues.

City — reporting party stated that someone has cut one of his tires on his vehicle.

City — reporting party stated that someone had stolen a firearm from his residence. Investigation continues.

REPORT OF A ALARM

City — false alarm

REPORT OF SUSPICIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES

Officer received a report of several individuals removing items from a home. Officer contacted the individuals who had permission form the owner to store his belongings.

REPORT OF A SUSPICIOUS VEHICLE

City — officer located the vehicle which had been involved in a accident earlier in the day. The vehicle was towed from the area.

REPORT OF A COMPLAINT

Reporting party stated that he was being harassed by a state agency. Officer investigated the incident and reported that it was unfounded.

REPORT OF A WELFARE CHECK

City — officer contacted the children and reported that they were fine.

REPORT OF CHILD NEGLECT

City — officer received a report of children living in unsafe conditions. Officer inspected the residence and reported that it was in disarray. D.C.F.S. was contacted and will continue with the investigation.

REPORT OF TRESPASSING

Reporting party stated that she rented her home to a family member who in turn has moved another individual into the home. Reporting party wanted the other individual removed from the property. Officer contacted the individuals living in the home who stated they were in the process of moving out.

REPORT OF PROPERTY DAMAGE

City — reporting party stated that someone had attempted to gain entery into her vehicle by prying on her window. Damage was done to the window.

REPORT OF A LOST PERSON

Reporting party stated that he was traveling on a dirt roadway and now in disoriented and doesn’t know where he is. The report was given to the Forest Service Ranger.

REPORT OF A SUSPICIOUS SUBJECT

City — the area was patrolled, but the subject was not located.

REPORT OF SHOTS FIRED

City — the area was patrolled, but nothing was located.

REPORT OF A DOMESTIC DISTURBANCE

City — officer contacted the parties involved and reported it was a verbal argument. They were advised to keep the peace.

But a search of the US Geological Survey site as of 3am Tuesday morning shows no such report.  (Updated:  The main page doesn’t show this, but there’s a preliminary report of a 3.5 quake 18 miles  at the same time, 2:57pm Monday afternoon!  Still not showing up on their summary page.)

HOWEVER, the UNR Nevada Seismological Lab does, in fact, show a quake of 3.5 magnitude taking place at about that same time, 2:57pm Monday afternoon.  The location reported, 18.6 miles West Northwest of Ely is close to another recent quake back on October 11th.   The More Information page on this tremor comes up blank. 

We’ll check later today with UNR to see what they say.  Did you feel anything, especially in Ruth?

1.)  Discussion/For Possible Action on ways White Pine County Fire District and EMS / City of Ely Fire Department and EMS to coordinate scheduling, training, and potential unification of services.  The District Attorney will report on the legalities of possible merger. 

The meeting will be at the Commission meeting chambers.
